Brigham Young University vs. University of Utah

BYU is the tougher admit by rate, accepting about 68.6% of applicants against 86.0% at Utah. BYU's enrolled first-years also post higher numbers, a middle-50% ACT of 28–32 (1290–1430 SAT) versus Utah's 22–29 (1200–1370), and a 3.89 average GPA to Utah's 3.67. BYU adds a non-academic gate too: every applicant clears an ecclesiastical endorsement and Honor Code commitment, which Utah does not require.

BYU is far cheaper for most students. Its annual tuition runs about $7,096 for members of the sponsoring church (roughly $14,192 for non-members), with $0 in required fees, one of the lowest sticker prices of any private university. Utah charges about $10,848 in tuition and fees for state residents and $35,198 for out-of-state students. Utah meets more students' need, awarding need-based aid to 36% of first-years at an average package near $13,241, against 21% at BYU averaging $10,450, but BYU's low base price still wins for nearly everyone who pays the member rate.

BYU is a private, faith-centered university in Provo owned by the LDS Church, where every student signs an Honor Code; Utah is the secular public flagship in Salt Lake City. BYU enrolls more undergraduates, about 34,354 to Utah's 28,064, and admits a smaller share of applicants. Utah draws a more religiously and culturally mixed crowd, runs the state's medical school and main academic hospital, and pulls 36% of its undergraduates from out of state. The cultures diverge sharply: a strict conduct code and required ecclesiastical endorsement at BYU, neither at Utah.

Both run solid engineering programs of similar weight, so fit and cost decide it more than prestige. Engineering accounts for about 8% of bachelor's degrees at each school. BYU's far lower tuition makes it the cheaper path to the degree for students paying the member rate, while Utah pairs engineering with a large research campus and its medical and health-sciences complex next door.

Business leads the degrees conferred at both, so neither is a clear step up. It is BYU's single largest field at about 16% of bachelor's degrees, and Utah's largest at about 14%. BYU's lower tuition gives a business-minded student the cheaper route, while Utah offers the same major inside a secular public university in a larger city with no conduct code attached.

Neither requires membership in the LDS Church, but the rules differ sharply. BYU admits students of any faith, yet every applicant must obtain an ecclesiastical endorsement and commit to the Honor Code, and BYU rates religious affiliation a very important admission factor. Utah, a public university, marks religious affiliation 'not considered' and imposes no conduct code or endorsement, so practice or non-practice never enters its review.
