Florida State University vs. University of Central Florida
A lot of Florida students treat these two as the same safety with different mascots, then pick by name recognition. Look closer and they want different things from you. UCF runs enormous, an undergraduate body far larger than FSU's, sprawled across Orlando with the city's aerospace, defense, and simulation work feeding straight into its engineering, computing, and health programs. You get the busy research machine, and you pay for it in scale: bigger lecture halls, a thin Greek and on-campus scene, more time spent making yourself findable. Florida State stays a fraction the size up in Tallahassee, the state capital, around the old Westcott fountain, where business and the social sciences draw the crowd and a tighter teaching ratio puts faculty within reach. FSU also admits a smaller share of who applies, so treat it as the harder ticket and Seminoles football as the genuine fall ritual. Both schools sit under Florida's public system, which still makes you submit an SAT or ACT, and both keep in-state tuition cheap. FSU runs the more selective, more residential campus, the easier place to be known, so if you'd rather not disappear into a giant research machine, it belongs higher on your list than its name recognition suggests.

Florida State vs. UCF: frequently asked questions
Is it harder to get into FSU or UCF?+
FSU is harder to crack. Florida State admits about 23.8% of applicants against 42.8% at UCF, so UCF lets in close to twice the share. Who enrolls tracks that same gap: FSU's first-years post a middle-50% SAT of 1300–1410 and ACT of 29–32 with an average high school GPA near 4.29, while UCF sits at 1220–1350 SAT, 25–30 ACT, and a 4.18 GPA. Both weigh the rigor of your course load most heavily, and several UCF majors run limited-access and tougher than the overall rate suggests.
Is FSU or UCF cheaper, especially for out-of-state students?+
FSU carries the lower out-of-state sticker, about $21,683 in tuition and fees against $24,076 at UCF, though UCF edges ahead in state at roughly $6,368 to FSU's $6,517. Aid tilts back toward Tallahassee: FSU meets more demonstrated need on average (about 75% versus 72%) and grants a larger average need-based package, roughly $17,669 to UCF's $14,588, reaching about 38% of first-years against 34% at UCF. A high-need student can land well below FSU's small sticker premium, while full-pay families will find the two nearly even.
Is UCF or FSU better for engineering and computer science?+
UCF fits an engineering or computing focus better. Engineering and computer science together make up about 14% of UCF's bachelor's degrees, nearly its largest field, tied closely to Orlando's aerospace, defense, and simulation industries. FSU groups engineering and computing at roughly 9% of degrees, concentrating its weight instead in business, the health and life sciences, and the social sciences. UCF simply packs more students into those fields, so it edges FSU for a student set on engineering or CS.
What is FSU known for that UCF isn't?+
Business defines FSU more than anything else, alongside the social sciences, psychology, and the creative arts. That single field accounts for about 25% of FSU's bachelor's degrees, far ahead of any other, versus roughly 15% at UCF, where degrees spread more evenly across business, engineering and computing, and the health professions. FSU also runs a much louder Greek and residential scene: about 19% of men join fraternities and 26% of women join sororities, with three-quarters of students living on campus, while UCF's Greek participation stays in the single digits.
Which is bigger, UCF or FSU, and how do their graduation rates compare?+
UCF dwarfs FSU in size, about 60,083 undergraduates to FSU's 34,271, one of the largest student bodies in the country, and that scale reaches the classroom with a 26:1 student-faculty ratio versus 17:1 at FSU. FSU graduates and keeps students at a higher clip, posting an 86% six-year graduation rate and 97% first-year retention against UCF's 78% and 93%. You trade UCF's breadth and size for FSU's tighter ratio and smaller classes.
Do FSU and UCF require the SAT or ACT?+
Yes, both require test scores, and neither has gone test-optional. As Florida public universities, FSU and UCF ask every first-year applicant for an SAT or ACT score. FSU's enrolled middle-50% SAT runs 1300–1410 (ACT 29–32), a notch above UCF's 1220–1350 (ACT 25–30). The rigor of your high school course load still carries the most weight among academic factors at both, so a strong transcript counts right alongside the score.
