Iowa runs slightly more selective, admitting about 79.9% of applicants against roughly 88.7% at Iowa State, though both stay accessible by flagship standards. Their enrolled classes look nearly identical on tests: a middle-50% SAT of 1130–1320 at Iowa and 1130–1350 at Iowa State, with both posting a 21–28 ACT range. Admission at either school leans hardest on your transcript, so strong grades in a demanding course load carry the most weight.

Iowa State is the state's engineering school by a wide margin. Engineering leads its degrees at about 20%, the single largest field on campus, and it adds another roughly 4% in computer science. Iowa grants engineering at about 6% of its degrees, a much smaller program inside a university built around medicine, writing, and business. A student set on engineering finds far more peers, majors, and labs in Ames.

Iowa leans the more health-focused of the two. The health professions account for about 8% of its degrees, and the university runs an academic medical center on the edge of campus that puts a teaching hospital next door to its clinical and pre-health students. Iowa State's degree mix leads with engineering, business, and agriculture, with the life sciences present but no comparable health-professions concentration in Ames. A nursing or pre-med student finds the heavier clinical footing at Iowa.

Iowa State carries the lower price for Iowa residents, about $10,787 in tuition and fees against $11,622 at Iowa, and it stretches aid further. Iowa State meets roughly 80% of demonstrated need on average to Iowa's 53%, reaches more first-years with need-based grants (about 47% versus 38%), and posts a larger average package near $15,798 against $14,098. For most in-state families, Iowa State nets out as the stronger value.

Strong at both, since neither leans on residency. Iowa admitted 84.6% of in-state applicants and 81.1% of out-of-state applicants in its Fall 2025 data, while Iowa State admitted 93.4% of in-state and 91.5% of out-of-state in Fall 2024, a gap of only a few points either way. Out-of-staters already fill nearly half of each entering class, about 48% at Iowa and 45% at Iowa State, so applying from outside Iowa carries no meaningful penalty.

Iowa City wraps tightly around its campus, an urban, walkable downtown with a deep arts and literary scene, and Iowa houses about 92% of first-years on campus. Ames feels more like a traditional, spread-out land-grant town set a bit apart from Iowa State, quieter and more residential, with about 89% of first-years living on campus. The two enroll similar numbers, roughly 23,400 undergraduates at Iowa and 25,600 at Iowa State, so class scale tracks close (17-to-1 and 18-to-1 student-faculty ratios). The setting, not the size, is what really differs.
