The two pull from a similar applicant scale, with Northeastern drawing more than 98,000 first-year applications to NYU's 113,000, though NYU enrolls a far larger class of roughly 5,800 first-years next to Northeastern's 2,759. Admitted scores run close: middle-50% SATs of 1450–1520 at Northeastern and 1480–1550 at NYU, with a 33–35 ACT at both. Since both stay test-optional, a strong application without scores plays at either.

Northeastern concentrates more of its degrees in computer science, where computer and information sciences make up about 16% of what it confers, its third-largest field behind business and engineering. NYU grants computing roughly 8% of its degrees, tucked inside a university that the performing arts, social sciences, and business lead. Both programs hold up well, but a CS-focused undergraduate experience tilts toward Northeastern, whose co-op weaves paid professional work straight into the degree.

By share of degrees, Northeastern leans harder into business: it ranks as the single largest field at about 23%, the most-conferred area on campus. Business covers roughly 12% of NYU's degrees, anchored by the Stern School, and trails both the visual and performing arts and the social sciences in NYU's mix. Graduates from both land in strong recruiting markets, though a business-first degree finds deeper concentration at Northeastern, while Stern sits inside NYU's broader, arts-and-social-sciences-led university.

For high-need families the two land close, since both meet 100% of demonstrated financial need. Northeastern charges a bit more on tuition and fees, about $69,289 against $62,796 at NYU, yet it spreads aid wider: roughly 50% of its first-years receive need-based grant aid, versus about 29% at NYU. NYU's average package runs larger, near $66,624 to Northeastern's $60,416, so its lower-sticker, higher-average picture reaches a thinner slice of the class. Add on-campus housing and food and the total climbs at both, roughly $22,000 a year at Northeastern and $23,500 at NYU.

NYU runs larger, enrolling about 29,760 undergraduates to Northeastern's 22,695, and it teaches at a tighter 8:1 ratio against Northeastern's 16:1. Their settings diverge as sharply as the headcounts. NYU keeps no traditional campus, threading through Greenwich Village so the city does the work of one, while Northeastern holds a defined Boston campus that houses nearly everyone, about 99% on-campus to NYU's 83%. Both pull heavily from beyond their home states, with 72% of NYU's first-years and 68% of Northeastern's arriving from out of state.
