Southern Methodist University vs. Texas Christian University
Forty miles of highway separate SMU and TCU, and the two cities behind them tell you most of what you're choosing between. SMU plants you in University Park, a wealthy pocket of Dallas where the corporate towers downtown feed straight into the Cox School and recruiters know the campus by name. TCU keeps you in Fort Worth, looser and more communal, where the cowtown roots still show and the whole student body seems to know each other. Business runs the show at both, though TCU pours an even bigger share of its class into the Neeley School and stacks the health professions and nursing right behind it. Greek life sets the social tempo on each campus, harder at TCU, where a clear majority of students pledge and the calendar bends around it. They split on faith too: SMU traces to the Methodist church, TCU to the Disciples of Christ, and neither presses it on you day to day. Pledge season aside, decide how big a pond you want, because TCU runs noticeably larger and SMU keeps things tighter and more urban.

SMU vs. TCU: frequently asked questions
Is it harder to get into SMU or TCU?+
Effectively a tie on the headline rate: SMU admits about 48% of its applicants and TCU about 48.1%, so neither is the clear tougher door. The submitted-score profiles split sharply, though. SMU's middle-50% scorers land at 1360–1470 on the SAT and 31–34 on the ACT, well above TCU's 1110–1330 and 26–31, so SMU's enrolled class posts the stronger test numbers. Both schools stay test-optional and lean hardest on GPA and course rigor in a holistic read.
Is SMU or TCU better for business?+
Both build their reputation on business, but they weight it differently. TCU runs more business-concentrated, with about 33% of bachelor's degrees coming from the Neeley School against 23% at SMU's Cox School, where business still leads by a wide margin. After business, SMU spreads into the social sciences and communication, while TCU pairs its business core with strong communication and a sizable health-professions and nursing track that SMU does not match. For a business-dense campus, TCU concentrates more of the class in it; for a business anchor inside a broader Dallas-facing school, SMU fits.
Is SMU or TCU cheaper after financial aid?+
SMU covers more need, which narrows a sticker gap that starts in TCU's favor. TCU lists tuition and fees near $66,610 against SMU's $71,816, so TCU costs less before aid. SMU meets about 90% of demonstrated need with an average aid package near $65,143, while TCU meets about 79% with an average package near $50,804. TCU spreads aid to a slightly wider group, around 40% of first-years versus 34% at SMU, so the cheaper option depends on how much of your need each school actually meets.
Is SMU or TCU bigger?+
TCU is the larger campus, enrolling about 11,152 undergraduates to SMU's 7,545. Class scale tracks that gap, with a 13-to-1 student-faculty ratio at TCU and a tighter 11-to-1 at SMU. Both keep nearly everyone close, housing about 96% of first-years on campus, and both hold students well: TCU retains 93% of first-years and graduates 86% within six years, while SMU retains 91% and graduates 83%.
Does SMU or TCU have a bigger Greek life scene?+
TCU carries the heavier Greek presence by a clear margin. About 51% of TCU men join fraternities and 61% of women join sororities, against 36% and 45% at SMU. Greek life shapes the social calendar at both schools, but at TCU a majority of students pledge, so it sits closer to the center of campus life. SMU keeps a strong system without quite the same saturation.
What is the difference between SMU and TCU's religious affiliation?+
SMU traces to the United Methodist Church, while TCU affiliates with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Neither weighs religious affiliation in admission as anything more than a minor factor, and both run as mainstream private universities rather than devotional ones. The heritage shows in history and naming more than in daily requirements, so practicing students of any faith and non-religious students fit at either.
