University of California, Irvine vs. University of California, San Diego

Effectively a tie on the headline rate: UC San Diego admits about 28.6% of first-year applicants and UC Irvine about 28.9%. The pools run close in scale, with roughly 136,750 applications to UCSD and 124,231 to UCI. Both go test-blind and weigh the rigor of your high school record and academic GPA most heavily, so the rest of the application separates admits at either, not scores. UCSD publishes an average admitted GPA near 3.88, while UCI reports none in its Common Data Set.

For engineering and computing, UC Irvine leans harder into those fields of the two. At UCI they make up about 22% of degrees, the second most popular area behind the social sciences. UC San Diego grants engineering and computing at about 19% of degrees but houses them inside a more sciences-dominated university, where the biological and physical sciences together account for roughly a quarter of all degrees. Pick UCI for a campus where engineering and CS sit near the top of the mix; UCSD offers the same fields wrapped in a heavier science core.

UC San Diego wins this one cleanly. Biological and life sciences rank as UCSD's single most popular area at about 20% of bachelor's degrees, and the sciences overall reach roughly 25%, the largest concentration on campus, with oceanography through the Scripps Institution adding depth. UC Irvine puts the sciences at about 17% of degrees, strong but trailing the social sciences and the engineering-and-computing block. A sciences-first or pre-med-heavy student fits UCSD more naturally.

On sticker price, UC Irvine carries the lower figure. In-state tuition and fees run about $16,454 at UCI versus $20,892 at UCSD, while out-of-state and international students pay roughly $54,056 at UCI to $58,494 at UCSD. Aid narrows the gap: UCSD enrolls a larger share of first-years on need-based aid (about 52% versus 44% at UCI), with a similar average package near $30,932 against UCI's $30,774, and UCI meets a bit more demonstrated need on average, about 86% to UCSD's 82%. On-campus food and housing land close, near $19,650 at UCI and $20,300 at UCSD.

Out-of-state applicants face longer odds at both, and slightly longer at UC Irvine. Only about 9% of UCI undergraduates come from outside California, versus about 12% at UC San Diego, so non-residents compete for a thin slice of each class. UCSD's holistic review lists state residency as an important factor, so the overall acceptance rate understates the climb for applicants coming from out of state at either campus.

Drawing the cleanest line is the residential college structure. UC San Diego sorts its roughly 35,000 undergraduates into themed residential colleges, each with its own general-education path and community, which gives a large coastal campus in La Jolla a smaller, more decentralized feel. UC Irvine houses about 30,000 undergraduates on a more centralized campus in Orange County, closer to beaches and city amenities. Both hold a 19:1 student-faculty ratio and house most students on campus, so the contrast lives in the college system and the surrounding setting rather than the teaching scale.
