For California residents UCSB charges the lower sticker on tuition and fees, about $17,643 against UCSD's $20,892, though UCSD's on-campus housing and food come in cheaper, near $20,319 a year to UCSB's roughly $23,974. Out-of-state tuition and fees nearly match: about $56,913 at UCSB and $58,494 at UCSD. Both meet about 82% of demonstrated need on average. UCSD reaches more first-years with need-based aid (about 52% to UCSB's 44%), while UCSB hands out the larger average package, near $35,891 versus UCSD's $30,932, so higher-need families land close after aid.

Running substantially larger, UCSD enrolls about 35,442 undergraduates to UCSB's 23,091, on similar teaching scale: a 19-to-1 student-faculty ratio at UCSD and 18-to-1 at UCSB. The settings diverge as much as the size. UCSD occupies a large campus in the La Jolla area of San Diego, while UCSB sits on a Pacific bluff in suburban Goleta, where most students live near the beach. Both house the large majority of undergraduates on or near campus and hold onto first-years strongly, about 95% at UCSD and 93% at UCSB.

Neither requires them. Along with every University of California campus, UCSD and UCSB stay test-blind and ignore SAT or ACT scores in admission even when you submit them. That puts the most weight on the rigor of your high school record and your academic GPA: UCSD reports an average admitted GPA near 3.88 and UCSB a weighted average near 4.29, so the two figures aren't directly comparable, but a strong transcript carries you furthest at either school.
