Step-by-Step Approach:

  • Identify your leadership strength → Identify the type of leader you are or the leadership skill you excel at (ex; motivating others, organizing, problem-solving) and why it matters to you.
  • Show it in action → Give specific examples or stories showing how you led a team, influenced others, resolved conflicts, or contributed to a group project over time.
  • Highlight the impact → Explain the results of your leadership. How did it help others, improve the group/project, or contribute to your personal growth?
  • Reflect and connect → Reflect on what this experience taught you and how it shapes the way you approach future leadership opportunities.

"Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.”

Step-by-Step Approach:

  • Identify your creative outlet → Clearly name the form your creativity takes; artistic, analytical, innovative, or problem-solving. Explain what draws you to this outlet and why it feels like the most natural way for you to express ideas, emotions, or curiosity.
  • Show it in action → Describe specific moments where you used creativity to build, design, solve, or imagine something. Explain your process: how you brainstormed, experimented, revised, or combined ideas to create something.
  • Highlight the impact → Explain how it affected others or helped you grow. Use concrete results when possible.
  • Reflect and connect → Share what you learned about thinking, communication, or self-expression. Connect how this shapes your academic approach, future goals, or how you hope to contribute creatively at UC.

"What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated it over time?”

  • Identify your talent/skill → Name the ability you excel at, whether it’s communication, leadership, writing, empathy, strategy, creativity, problem-solving, organization, or something technical. Explain why this skill is meaningful or central to who you are.
  • Show it in action → Provide specific examples of situations where you developed, applied, or strengthened this skill over time. Highlight moments of growth: challenges you navigated, responsibilities you took on, or ways you deliberately improved this ability.
  • Highlight the impact → Explain how this skill supported others, elevated a team, or contributed to your personal or academic growth. Use specific outcomes when possible.
  • Reflect and connect → Share what this skill has taught you. Connect it to your future and explain how you expect to keep developing this strength in college, especially within the UC environment.

"Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.”

Step-by-Step Approach:

  • Identify the opportunity or barrier → Describe the enrichment program, advanced coursework, mentorship, academic resource or the barrier such as limited access, instability, obligations, or constraints. Explain why it mattered and how it shaped your educational pathway.
  • Show your response → Walk through the steps you took to pursue the opportunity or actively overcome the challenge you encountered. Show your initiative, adaptability, and decision-making.
  • Highlight the impact → Describe what you achieved, what you learned, or how the experience influenced your confidence or direction. If applicable, provide specific outcomes like higher performance, expanded knowledge, or increased access.
  • Reflect and connect → Share how this experience shapes your academic goals or the way you approach future challenges.

PIQ #5

"Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?”

Step-by-Step Approach:

  • Define your challenge → Describe a real obstacle that tested your resilience or priorities and explain why it resonates personally.
  • Show your response → Break down the actionable steps you took: resources you sought, systems you created, etc. Be specific: schedules, coping strategies, tutoring, part-time work, communication with teachers, etc.
  • Highlight academic impact realistically → Explain how the challenge affected grades, attendance, workload, motivation. Colleges want honesty. Mention improvements, stability regained, or skills developed (time management, persistence, self-advocacy).
  • Reflect on personal growth → Connect the experience to who you are now. What qualities strengthened? How did you mature? How do you now approach stress, setbacks, or deadlines differently than before?

PIQ #6

"Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.”

Step-by-Step Approach:

  • Identify your academic passion → Pinpoint the subject that excites you most and describe your origin story: When did it first click? Why does it connect with you personally?
  • Show your curiosity → Describe how you explored it: AP/Honors classes, competitions, research projects, clubs, internships, summer programs, personal study, certifications, tutoring others, creating content, or launching initiatives. Show what you did, not just that you participated.
  • Highlight the impact → Explain what skills you gained: analysis, creativity, leadership, technical expertise, design thinking, communication, research ability. Show how these shaped your confidence or goals.
  • Reflect and tie to UC → Show how this subject relates to your chosen major or future career. Mention how you plan to pursue it at UC (research labs, majors, courses, student orgs, internships, or interdisciplinary opportunities).

PIQ #7

"What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?”

Step-by-Step Approach:

  • Define your community → Your community can be cultural, school-based, local, online, family-based, or identity-centered. Identify the setting and explain the need or issue you observed (lack of representation, inequity, low resources, disengagement, misinformation, isolation, etc.)
  • Show your initiative → Describe the exact role you played: leading an event, launching a program, creating digital content, advocating, mentoring, or creating resources. Show what you did that no one else did.
  • Highlight the impact → Use numbers when possible (people reached, funds raised, students taught, followers gained, hours spent, resources created). If impact isn’t numerical, show emotional/social impact: confidence built, awareness raised, community strengthened.
  • Reflect and connect → Focus on values gained: empathy, initiative, cultural pride, problem-solving, leadership style, communication. Tie it to how you plan to contribute to the UC community.

PIQ #8

"Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California?”

Step-by-Step Approach:

  • Identify something not shown yet → Pick a trait, story, or perspective that’s not in your activities list or other PIQs such as curiosity, resilience, innovation, cultural identity, long-term commitment, unusual passion, or a personal philosophy.
  • Show it in context → Tell one short story that illustrates this trait: a moment when you acted differently than peers, solved a problem uniquely, supported someone deeply, built something from scratch, or took initiative without being asked.
  • Highlight the impact → Explain how this trait shapes your everyday behavior; how you collaborate, think, learn, create, or lead. What do you bring to a group that is valuable?
  • Reflect and connect → Tie it directly to what UC values (curiosity, diversity, service, innovation) and how you’ll contribute.
