Carnegie Mellon University vs. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Prestige tells you these schools belong in the same conversation. It won't tell you which one fits you. Reach for MIT and science and engineering swallow the place whole: a small campus in Cambridge, computer science out front, engineering right behind, the two granting most of the degrees, your professors close enough that the low student-to-faculty ratio actually means something. Carnegie Mellon hands you a wider door. Its School of Computer Science and College of Engineering sit beside a College of Fine Arts that puts drama and design students down the hall from coders, so you can build a degree that runs from algorithms to the stage in Pittsburgh. Engineering draws the largest crowd there, with computer science close behind. Both grind you hard. The early plans split cleanly, and that should drive your timing: CMU stays test-optional and runs binding Early Decision, so apply early only if it's your one true first choice, while MIT requires the SAT or ACT and offers nonbinding Early Action you can send without locking yourself in.

Carnegie Mellon vs. MIT: frequently asked questions
MIT is the tougher admit on the headline number, taking about 4.5% of applicants last cycle against 11.7% at Carnegie Mellon. Admitted scores run a touch higher too: MIT's middle-50% SAT lands at 1520–1570 and ACT at 34–36, next to CMU's 1510–1560 and 34–35. The application itself diverges in one concrete way. MIT requires the SAT or ACT, while CMU stays test-optional and merely 'considers' scores.
Both sit at the top of computer science, so the split lives in how each program is structured and weighted. Carnegie Mellon admits you straight into the School of Computer Science, where CS accounts for its second-largest field at about 16% of degrees, trailing engineering at 22%. At MIT, computer science tops every field at roughly 29% of degrees, with engineering close behind at 27%, placing CS at the core of a science-and-engineering catalog. CMU gives you direct-admit CS inside a university that also reaches into the arts, whereas MIT runs CS as its leading discipline within a tighter technical institute.
They split on this. Carnegie Mellon runs a binding Early Decision round, drawing 4,423 ED applications last cycle and admitting 612, so an early application locks you into enrolling if you get in. MIT instead offers nonbinding, non-restrictive Early Action, which lets you apply early without promising to attend or giving up the right to apply elsewhere. MIT publishes one overall admit rate near 4.5% and skips a separate early-round funnel in its Common Data Set. Reserve a CMU ED application for the school you'd pick first without hesitation.
Call it a tie for families with need, since both meet 100% of demonstrated financial need. CMU lists slightly higher tuition and fees, about $68,776 against $64,730 at MIT, yet MIT's average need-based package runs larger at roughly $69,036 to CMU's $56,222, and more MIT first-years draw need-based aid, about 54% versus 33% at Carnegie Mellon. Add on-campus housing and food (about $21,264 at MIT and $18,894 at CMU) and the sticker rises at both, so higher-need applicants land well under the published price either way.
Carnegie Mellon outsizes MIT among undergraduates, enrolling about 7,824 to MIT's 4,535. MIT keeps the leaner student-to-faculty ratio at roughly 3:1 against CMU's 6:1, which shrinks its classes relative to enrollment. Both house nearly every first-year on campus and hold onto them well, with first-year retention around 98% at CMU and 99% at MIT, plus six-year graduation rates close to 94% and 96%.
Carnegie Mellon, no contest. Its degree mix sets aside genuine weight for creative work: the fine and performing arts run about 8% of bachelor's degrees, alongside engineering (22%) and computer science (16%), thanks to a College of Fine Arts seated next to the technical schools. MIT's degrees pool almost wholly in science and engineering, led by computer science (29%), engineering (27%), mathematics (14%), and the physical sciences, with little beyond STEM. CMU was built for a route that crosses technology and the arts, while MIT answers better to a focused technical degree.
