Northwestern University vs. University of Chicago
One school hands you a Core; the other hands you a catalog. Every UChicago undergraduate works through a multi-area Core before specializing, and the degrees pile up where Hyde Park lives hardest: social sciences, humanities, the foundational sciences, math. You'd read theory for its own sake and learn to defend an argument over dinner. Northwestern loosens the distribution rules and widens the menu. It still leads with the social sciences, but engineering carries real weight, the life sciences draw crowds, and aspiring reporters chase bylines through Medill. Engineering splits them cleanest. Northwestern grants it as a top field; UChicago runs nothing close to that scale. Both stay private, test-optional, and quarter-paced, one on a lakefront campus in Evanston, one inside the city. Pick UChicago and you sign up for a fixed core that decides your first two years before you do.

Northwestern vs. UChicago: frequently asked questions
Is it harder to get into Northwestern or UChicago?+
UChicago is the tougher admit. It took about 4.5% of applicants last cycle against 7.7% at Northwestern, admitting roughly 1,955 of more than 43,000 versus Northwestern's 3,806 of about 49,474. The admitted profiles barely differ: both post a middle-50% SAT of 1510–1560 and an ACT of 34–35, so the gap lives in the admit rate, not the academic bar.
What's the difference between UChicago's Core and Northwestern's curriculum?+
UChicago makes every undergraduate complete a multi-area Core, and its degrees cluster around it. The social sciences dominate at roughly 34% of degrees, trailed by the humanities (16%) and the sciences (15%). Northwestern asks for lighter distribution requirements and spreads wider, led by the social sciences at about 18% but with engineering (12%), communication and journalism (11%), and the biological sciences (10%) all carrying real weight. One points you toward a structured, theory-first core; the other leaves room to build an applied or pre-professional path.
Is Northwestern or UChicago better for engineering?+
Northwestern wins on engineering, plainly, by what each school hands out. Engineering ranks among Northwestern's most-conferred fields at about 12% of degrees, and UChicago's mix carries no engineering category at that scale. UChicago instead loads its quantitative weight into the sciences (about 15% of degrees) and mathematics and statistics (9%). Computer science nearly matches across the two, roughly 9% at Northwestern and 8% at UChicago, so a student set on pure science and math finds UChicago's strength there.
Is Northwestern or UChicago cheaper after financial aid?+
Call it a wash for families with need, since both schools meet 100% of demonstrated need. Northwestern lists lower tuition and fees, about $70,589 against UChicago's $73,266, and aids a wider slice of students, roughly 44% to UChicago's 33%. UChicago's average need-based package runs heavier at about $82,308 versus Northwestern's $67,785, which pulls net cost for higher-need applicants well under the sticker at either.
Does Northwestern or UChicago have Early Decision and Early Action?+
Both run binding Early Decision, and UChicago layers a non-binding Early Action option on top, while Northwestern offers Early Decision only. Northwestern's Early Decision round pulled 5,154 applications and admitted 1,186 for the entering class. Early Decision locks you into enrolling if admitted at either school; UChicago's Early Action lets you apply and hear back early with no such commitment.
Which is bigger, Northwestern or UChicago?+
Northwestern runs the larger campus, enrolling about 9,060 undergraduates to UChicago's 7,519. Both still keep classes small, with student-faculty ratios of 6:1 at Northwestern and 5:1 at UChicago, and both house nearly all undergraduates on campus. Out-of-state students fill most of each class, about 79% at Northwestern and 85% at UChicago, so neither reads as a regional school.
