University of Michigan vs. University of Virginia

Size separates these two before anything else does. Michigan sprawls across Ann Arbor, far larger than UVA, and it pours most of its students into computer science, engineering, and business. If you want those fields, Michigan gives you a depth and scale Charlottesville can't touch. UVA keeps things smaller and points you at the liberal arts and social sciences, with classes ringing Jefferson's Lawn and the Rotunda. Two things will steer your application. Michigan still wants your SAT or ACT and offers only nonbinding Early Action, while UVA went test-optional and runs a binding Early Decision round that locks you in if you commit. Watch the aid line closely too: UVA pledges to meet your full demonstrated need, and Michigan stops short of that promise. So if your family's aid math is tight, the promise to meet full need makes UVA the safer call, even at the cost of Michigan's scale.

UMich vs. UVA: frequently asked questions

Is it harder to get into UMich or UVA?

Call it a near-tie on the headline numbers: UMich admits about 15.6% of applicants and UVA about 16.8%. Residency drives the real gap. Out-of-state students fill 45% of Michigan's enrollment but just 31% of UVA's, where state residency counts as a very important admissions factor. For a non-Virginian, that makes UVA the steeper climb despite its slightly higher published rate.

Do UMich and UVA require the SAT or ACT?

They split on this one. Michigan requires standardized scores from every applicant, and its enrolled first-years posted a middle-50% SAT of 1360–1530 and ACT of 31–34. UVA goes test-optional, so you can apply without scores at all; among those who did submit, the middle 50% landed at 1410–1520 on the SAT and 32–35 on the ACT. Part of why UVA's submitted ranges sit higher: lower scorers can simply withhold them.

Is UMich or UVA better for computer science, engineering, and business?

Michigan concentrates harder in all three. Computer science ranks as its single largest field at about 25% of degrees, engineering follows at 23%, and business at 20%, so those top three areas cover roughly two-thirds of degrees on their own. UVA spreads thinner across a broader mix: engineering runs about 10%, business and marketing 9%, and computer and information sciences 8%, trailing liberal arts and the social sciences. Go to Michigan for a STEM-and-business core, or to UVA for the same fields housed inside a liberal-arts university.

Is UMich or UVA cheaper for out-of-state students?

UVA wins on out-of-state sticker, charging about $60,787 in tuition and fees against $63,962 at Michigan, and it meets more need, covering 100% of demonstrated financial need through AccessUVA versus 91% at Michigan. Michigan does aid a slightly larger share of first-years, 39% to UVA's 34%, though UVA's average need-based package runs higher, near $37,123 to Michigan's $35,086. In-state, the order reverses: Michigan's resident tuition and fees of about $18,346 undercut UVA's $22,406.

Which is bigger, UMich or UVA?

Michigan dwarfs UVA on size, enrolling about 34,454 undergraduates to UVA's 17,901, nearly double. Teaching scale lands close, a 15-to-1 student-faculty ratio at Michigan and 14-to-1 at UVA, and both hold onto and graduate students at a high clip. Michigan posts 97% first-year retention and a 93% six-year graduation rate; UVA reaches 98% and 96%.

What are the early application options at UMich and UVA?

UVA opens more early doors. Michigan runs only nonbinding Early Action with no Early Decision, so applying early there never commits you to enroll. UVA pairs a nonbinding Early Action round with a binding Early Decision option, the latter obligating you to attend if admitted. With a clear first choice you want to signal, UVA's ED round gives you a lever Michigan simply doesn't carry.
