UVA admits a far smaller share, about 16.8% of applicants against roughly 54.6% at Virginia Tech, so the Hokies open a seat to more than three times the proportion. UVA grants engineering too, but at about 10% of degrees inside a university that leans toward the liberal arts and social sciences. A student set on an engineering-first environment fits Virginia Tech better, while UVA works for someone who wants engineering paired with a broad liberal-arts core.

Virginia Tech charges far less out of state on paper, about $38,310 in tuition and fees against $60,787 at UVA, a gap near $22,000 a year before aid. UVA closes that for families with need: through AccessUVA it meets 100% of demonstrated need and posts an average need-based package near $37,123, where Virginia Tech meets about 60% of need with an average package near $17,939. A high-need out-of-state applicant can see UVA's net cost drop well under its sticker, while a full-pay family pays clearly less at Virginia Tech. In state, tuition stays low at both, about $22,406 at UVA and $16,450 at Virginia Tech.

The two peak in different places. UVA leads with the liberal arts and general studies at about 16% of degrees, then the social sciences (13%), engineering (10%), and business (9%). At Virginia Tech the single largest field is business near 24%, with engineering close behind around 20% and the sciences, social sciences, and its agriculture and life-sciences programs rounding out the list. UVA spreads across the liberal arts and sciences, while Virginia Tech leans into business and applied STEM.

On size, Virginia Tech dwarfs UVA, enrolling about 31,536 undergraduates to UVA's 17,901, nearly double, and runs a 17:1 student-faculty ratio against UVA's 14:1. The two campuses feel as different as those numbers: Virginia Tech sits in Blacksburg, a college town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia, while UVA fills Charlottesville and its historic Academical Village. Nearly all first-years live on campus at both schools. UVA keeps and graduates students at a slightly higher clip, posting a 98% first-year retention rate and 96% six-year graduation rate against Virginia Tech's 95% and 86%.
